The Rearguard Healer
Sixty wounded. One river. Five days before the water comes.
The army is falling back across the Drowned Country, and at dawn on the fifth day the engineers will open the Brekken sluices and flood it. Dagan Rusk is the Ninth Company's Stitcher, the lowest healing class the System gives. Before then, he must get sixty wounded across the Ysse.
The Order's healers have taken the carts for the officers. Vorn horsemen are riding down the rearguard. On the road the System gives Dagan a new skill, Lifeline: he binds willing soldiers into one line, heals all of them with one cast, and splits a killing blow across the whole line, his own body included.
