Garrick Stonehale

Reader's guide

A soldier likes to know the ground before he walks it, and some readers feel the same about a book. So this page says what each book holds: the fighting, the wounds, the deaths, the language and how far the romance goes.

Every list is behind its own button, because it gives away what happens. If you want no hints, leave the buttons shut.

Content notes (Contains spoilers)
  • War violence on the page: arrows, lances, swords and cavalry raids on a retreating column, with real wounds. Horses are hurt and killed too.
  • Named major characters die on the page, among them people close to the hero. Wounded soldiers also die on the road.
  • Field surgery on the page: setting broken bones, cleaning and sewing wounds, with few supplies. The hero also sews his own wounds.
  • An amputation on the page: a soldier's arm is cut off with a saw.
  • The Grey Rot, a wasting rot in the flesh, keeps wounds from closing, spreads slowly and can kill. Its cold edges and its smell are described. Fever and flux appear too.
  • Soldiers swear, moderately. There are no slurs.
  • A closed-door romance begins and goes as far as one kiss. There are no explicit scenes, and no torture or sexual violence on the page. All characters are adults.
